1. Section-wise Weightage
The English Communicative curriculum assesses students across four major language dimensions. The theory paper is conducted for a total of 80 marks.

2. Section-wise Syllabus Breakdown
Section A: Reading Skills 22 Marks
This section will have two unseen passages with a maximum word limit of 750 words. The passages can have continuous and non-continuous text inspired by the themes in prescribed books.
- Questions will include Objective Type, Very Short Answer Type, and Short Answer Type (30-40 words).
- Assesses interpretation, analysis, inference, evaluation, and vocabulary in context.
Section B: Writing Skills 22 Marks
This section will have a variety of short and long writing tasks:
- Application for leave / change of subject / section / bus-timings (Max 50 words) 3 marks
- Factual Description of a person or object (Max 100 words) 4 marks
- One out of two Formal Letters thematically aligned to MCB topics (Max 120 words) 7 marks
- One out of two Articles based on verbal cues thematically aligned to MCB topics (Max 150 words) 8 marks
Section C: Grammar 10 Marks
Grammar items will be taught and assessed over a period of time. Topics include:
- Topics: Tenses, Modals, Subject-Verb Concord, Reported Speech (Commands/Requests, Statements, Questions), Clauses (Noun, Adverb, Relative), and Determiners.
- Assessment Types:
- Gap filling 3 marks
- Editing or Omission 4 marks
- Sentences Reordering or Sentence Transformation 3 marks
Section D: Literature Textbook 26 Marks
- Reference to Context: Two out of three extracts from prose/poetry. Very Short Answer Questions assessing global comprehension, interpretation, and inference. 4 × 2 = 8 marks
- Short Answer Questions: Five out of six from the Literature Reader (30-40 words each) testing local and global comprehension, appreciation, and analysis. 5 × 2 = 10 marks
- Long Answer Question: One out of two questions (approx. 150 words) assessing values, creativity, and extrapolation beyond the text. Can also be passage-based. 8 marks
3. Question Paper Design & Competencies
The examination evaluates students based on the following specific competencies:
- Demonstrative Knowledge + Understanding: Up to 30%
- Conceptual Application: Up to 35%
- Analysis, Evaluation and Creativity (Analysis & Synthesis): Up to 35%
4. Internal Assessment & Prescribed Books
Assessment of Listening and Speaking Skills (ALS)
ALS is an integrated component of all language skills and forms a part of the Subject Enrichment Activity under Internal Assessment. It is assessed out of 5 Marks based on:
- Interactive competence (Initiation and turn taking, relevance)
- Fluency (Cohesion, coherence, and speed of delivery)
- Pronunciation
- Language (Grammar and vocabulary)
