Entry: Summary & Analysis

The Discovery and the Escape

The story follows Griffin, a brilliant but remarkably "lawless person" who discovers how to make the human body transparent. By swallowing certain rare drugs, his body becomes as transparent as a sheet of glass, though it remains completely solid. After his landlord tries to eject him, Griffin seeks revenge by setting fire to the house. To escape without being seen, he removes all his clothes, becoming a homeless wanderer in the bitter cold of mid-winter London. His invisible presence is only betrayed when he steps in mud, leaving a trail of fresh bare footprints that temporarily fascinate two young boys before fading away completely.

Chaos in London

Desperate to survive the freezing January air, Griffin slips into a big London store at closing time. He breaks open boxes, dresses himself in warm clothes, and feasts on cold meat, sweets, and wine before sleeping on a pile of quilts. However, he oversleeps and is discovered by the shop assistants the next morning, forcing him to shed his newly found clothes and run away completely naked once again. Heading to Drury Lane, the centre of the theatre world, he disguises his invisible head with bandages, dark glasses, a false nose, and bushy side-whiskers. Before fleeing, he callously attacks a shopkeeper from behind and robs him of all his money.

Terror in the Village of Iping

Seeking solitude, Griffin travels to the quiet village of Iping and books two rooms at the local inn. The landlord's wife, Mrs Hall, attempts to be friendly, but Griffin harshly rebuffs her, claiming an accident has affected his face and that he wishes to remain undisturbed. When his stolen money runs out, he invisibly burglarises the local clergyman's desk. Shortly after, the landlord and his wife investigate his suspiciously empty bedroom, only for Griffin to invisibly attack them by throwing a hat in Mrs Hall's face and using a bedroom chair to push them both out of the room. When confronted by a furious Mrs Hall, Griffin loses his temper and throws off his bandages, revealing a horrifying headless man. When the village constable, Mr Jaffers, arrives to arrest him, Griffin strips off his remaining garments to become completely invisible, knocks the constable unconscious, and escapes into the unknown.

Key Figures

Griffin

A brilliant scientist but a fundamentally callous individual. Instead of using his incredible discovery of invisibility for the benefit of humanity, he uses it to commit arson, robbery, and physical assault simply to serve his own needs.

Mrs Hall

The inn landlord's wife. She tolerates Griffin's bizarre appearance and irritable temper because he pays in advance, but eventually falls into hysterics, convinced that her furniture is haunted by spirits.

Mr Jaffers

The dutiful village constable. He displays remarkable bravery by attempting to arrest a headless—and eventually completely invisible—man, firmly believing that a magistrate's warrant must be fulfilled no matter what.

Themes to Remember

Misuse of Science

The primary theme is that immense scientific power without a moral compass is highly dangerous. Griffin's brilliance is entirely overshadowed by his criminal and selfish behaviour.

The Price of Isolation

Griffin’s invisibility, rather than granting him ultimate freedom, alienates him from society. He is forced to wander naked in the bitter cold and cannot form any genuine human connections.

Fear of the Unknown

The villagers' reactions—ranging from assuming the stranger is merely eccentric to believing the moving furniture is caused by witchcraft—highlight how people struggle to comprehend the inexplicable.
