Subject: Severe health hazards caused by open burning of waste
Sir/Madam,
Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I wish to draw the attention of the civic authorities to the rampant and unchecked open burning of domestic garbage and biomedical waste—including used syringes and bandages—in our city.
This hazardous practice releases toxic gases, leading to a rise in respiratory diseases like asthma and bronchitis, which are particularly dangerous for children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Furthermore, the careless disposal of biomedical waste risks spreading infectious diseases. It is imperative that hospitals strictly enforce scientific disposal protocols, utilizing color-coded segregation bins. Simultaneously, the Municipal Corporation must ensure timely domestic waste collection to discourage residents from burning their garbage.
I urge the Pollution Control Board to act swiftly against violators. We also need mass awareness campaigns, heavily involving Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), to educate citizens on responsible waste management. I request you to amplify this issue for the sake of public health and our environment.
